Saying Thanks

Rhett McCann, Bob Theriot and I would like to say “Thank you” to Paul Andres and his wife, Susie, for all the work they have done over these past five years in providing the Knights with this monthly newsletter.

We have worked these past three months with Paul in putting the newsletter together and see why it will take three of us to do the work done by Paul.

The newsletter may look like a simple process. It is basically only seven pages of articles and information, but this is where Paul’s magic came in.

Page 1 had the Scripture passage at the top followed by the writing in the body. Paul is the one who crafted this page.

There are also times when there wasn’t that much going on and Paul had to find material to fill the vacant space.

This he did in fine fashion with the different antidotes and stories which people furnished. This help will be greatly appreciated in our tour of duty.

It will be the task of Rhett, Bob and I to try to emulate that magic. This is where you, the Knights, can help.

If you have any information that you think would be of interest to your brother Knights ,please forward it to Rhett, Bob or me at M_rhett@bellsouth.net, bobtheriot@digitalbayou.net or doncguillot@charter.net, so it can be put in the newsletter. Everything might not be put in that newsletter because of space, but it will be kept and used as necessary.

We have a lot of new members to the council through transfer and initiation. We welcome everyone and encourage you to take an active part in the council by attending meetings and voicing your opinions and by supporting the Council’s activities if you are available.

When you see Paul please give thanks for his tireless effort for the newsletter.

Grand Knight Report --- April 2008

Brother Knights,

The Ladies Appreciation Dinner, Seafood Party, and Installation Dinner will each be coming up in the next few months. Despite the social emphasis of our calendar, this is an important time in our fraternal year because this is when we look forward and plan many of the activities and service programs for the year ahead. In addition to reviewing activities from the past year, we’re also looking at new ways to make an impact in our Church, Community, Youth, Families, and Council. In each of these, we have to address if the need or opportunity fits our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We also must determine if we have the resources to take on the new activity. Though financial resources are important, the biggest resource restriction that concerns me is people.

Will we have the people we need to identify the need or opportunity and bring new ideas forward? Will we have the people we need to share their talents and skills? Will we have the people we need to develop, plan and lead our efforts? Will we have the people we need to work these events?

We are a large council. But like many organizations, it’s a small number of dedicated Brother Knights, along with their wives and families that give endless hours to support our council events. I see the same people working each event. I’d rather see less of them! Don’t get me wrong. I’m forever grateful for these hardworking and dedicated folks. I’d just like to see all of our council members giving a little of their time rather than a few constantly stretched so thin. Our small group of “regulars” probably put in over 150 combined hours each month. It’s an impressive contribution of time and we accomplish much. But imagine what we could do if each of our 220 Brother Knights gave just an hour or two a month. And imagine if they involved their spouse and family half of that time. We could have over 500 hours of volunteer effort every month to Support our Church, Better our Community, Encourage our Youth, Strengthen our Families, and Build up our Council.

I hope my point here is obvious. Each and every Brother Knight and their family is a vital part of our Council. If you’re motivated to be very involved – Great! But I’m not asking for that level of involvement. If you’re not very involved right now, consider committing an additional hour or two each month to your council. If we’ve not seen you in a long time, start by committing that time to attending our next general membership meeting to get reacquainted with your council. Talk to me or one of our Program Directors about a way to get involved that fits your time, interests and talents. We need each of you.

Let’s put our faith in action. Let's make a difference.

Vivat Jesus

Prayer Dedication

Prayer to End Abortion

“It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you can live as you wish”
....Mother Theresa

Most Holy Mother, we ask that you touch the hearts and minds of those who are so troubled as to put their own wants and comfort before the lives of the innocent. Help them see that the unborn is a priceless joining of body, mind and soul. Guide them to understand these lives are no less precious to God than those of us who are fortunate enough to be born.

Give us the opportunity to comfort those in need; to avoid the temptations of a quick solution,
leading to eternal damnation. Help them see beyond their present situation and embrace the
teaching of Jesus Christ. Allow them to reach out in service to others and in turn serve themselves.
Show all the peace of Jesus Christ and remove the scourge of abortion from the face of the earth.

Amen

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known
that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or
sought your intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with confidence, I fly to you, O virgin of virgins,
my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.

Amen.

RANGER ROSARIES

Ranger Rosaries make and donate rosaries to our troops overseas.

Betty Guillot, wife of Sir Knight Don Guillot, has been working with Ranger Rosaries since December 2006. She was joined in this patriotic cause in May, 2007 by Bonnie Bauman, Margie Mayeux, Ronnie Seroka and Caroline Mills.

These ladies usually meet after 8:45 Mass on Tuesday. They work and pray together until about 11. The ladies also make rosaries at home. Betty collects the rosaries, checks that they meet the Ranger Rosary standards, does a final process and then mails them. Betty has mailed out over 1800 rosaries.

This is strictly a charitable operation. The funds used to buy the material are donated.

Anyone interested in helping either with making the rosaries or donating funds can contact Betty at 985-641-7377 or bettyguillot@charter.net.

How is your life going?

Are you happy with your daily activity – the work that you do?
If you’re happy with what you’re doing during those working hours – really happy – you can stop reading now, and accept my congratulations for making a good choice in your life. But if you have a small twinge of discontent, or a grating feeling in the pit of your stomach that says “Is this all there is?”, then read on.
You have nothing to lose by talking to me about a career with the Knights of Columbus. We have openings in the Kennedy Agency for field agents – life insurance salesmen – and it just might be the career you’re looking for. One that let’s you do well for yourself while also doing good for others. Where the amount of work you do allows you to earn without limit. Where you can give the job the time it needs and deserves, and still not miss your child’s next soccer game or school play. Where you make a difference in the lives of those you meet…you really do help. Where, when you lay your head on the pillow at night, you can be comforted by the fact that world is a better place because of the work you do. Not a bad place to be.
The job is not for everyone. Sometimes those who talk to me decide that they would be better served elsewhere, and sometimes I make that decision. Either way, you haven’t lost anything by finding out if maybe there might be a better way to spend your working life.
So what do you think? If that feeling is there – is this all there is? – drop me an e-mail and I’ll get someone in touch. Just a conversation. Nothing to lose.
I’m at terry.kennedy@kofc.org and I’d love to help you.

Financial Secretary - Eugene Seroka

Our Refund Support Vocations Program(RSVP) is doing well. This program is to support those in vocations not only financially but in other ways. Those attending the Seminary are usually on their own and they need all the support they can get.
Last year we chose Daniel Lacourrege, a Slidell native and he was very appreciative of our monetary gift. I checked in with his parents and he is progressing very well. Daniel is at the Abby and at the time of my call was in the Holy Land doing research. Our officers decided to continue our gift for another year.
We are very fortunate, we found anothr Seminarian from Slidell, William Joseph Dunbar. William presently is in a co-working internship with the Legionnaires of Christ in Phidelphia and will be entering the seminary in June, 2008 in Connecticut
William is the son of Robert Dunbar, who is the Chief of Staff for the City of Slidell, and a Deacon at Our Lady of Lourdes.
We are blessed to have these young men living in our city..

4th Degree News From Sir Knight Bobby Gremillion

Dear Sir Knight,

Many things are happening in the 4th degree these days. First we will be having our annual Blue Mass May 18th. Second we are having our installation of officers June 28 at La Rosetta’s restaurant. This year we are separating the 4th degree installation from the 3rd degree. Although there will be two installations, the installations will be much shorter.

Finally Fr. Seelos Assembly has been asked to assist with creating a veteran’s day parade. This is a new, exciting and worthy project that gives us the chance to honor our veterans.

Please attend our meetings the second Wednesday of every month. Please contact Tim Helbling or myself if you are interested in becoming a 4th degree member.

Vivat Jesus,
Robert Gremillion

We have a new 4th Degree member. The new Sir Knight is Larry Gillio.

A Fire in Your Hut

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Everyday he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions.

One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, "God! How could you do this to me?"

Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal, " they replied.

Moral of the Story:

It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives...even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons that Grace of God.
